PaperName is a browser extension designed to identify academic papers and help users download PDF files using clear, standardized filenames.
Information processed
To provide its features, PaperName may process information from the webpage or PDF currently selected by the user, including:
- the active page URL and page title;
- bibliographic metadata such as paper title, authors, publication year, journal name, and DOI;
- relevant webpage text, structured metadata, and PDF links; and
- PDF metadata or first-page text when needed to identify a paper for a user-initiated download.
PaperName does not collect a general browsing history. Page information is accessed only when needed for paper identification, filename generation, and PDF download or renaming.
Local and session storage
PaperName uses Chrome storage to save user preferences such as interface language, filename prefixes, sequence numbers, naming formats, and website-label cleanup settings. It may also temporarily store recent paper metadata and a one-time custom filename so that an article page can be associated with its PDF download.
This information is stored in the user's browser. The developer does not operate a server that receives or stores these settings.
External services and network requests
When the optional DOI / Crossref metadata-completion feature is enabled, PaperName may send an identified DOI to the public Crossref API to retrieve bibliographic metadata. It does not intentionally send the page's full text, PDF content, custom prefix, sequence number, or filename settings to Crossref. Crossref's handling of API requests is governed by the Crossref Privacy Policy.
When the user initiates a PDF download or first-page detection, the browser may request the PDF directly from the website hosting that file. Such requests are subject to the privacy practices of the source website.
Data sharing and sale
PaperName does not sell user data. It does not use or transfer user data for advertising, profiling, creditworthiness, lending, or purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose. A DOI is shared with Crossref only when necessary for the optional metadata-completion feature described above.
Remote code
PaperName does not execute remotely hosted JavaScript or WebAssembly code. All executable extension code is included in the extension package. Metadata returned by Crossref and PDF content returned by source websites are processed as data, not executable code.
Purpose limitation
Information accessed by PaperName is used only to provide paper identification, bibliographic metadata completion, filename generation, sequence management, and PDF download or renaming features.
Data retention and control
Saved settings remain in Chrome storage until the user changes or clears them, or removes the extension. Temporary session metadata is cleared by the browser with the relevant extension session storage. A one-time custom naming value expires automatically after approximately five minutes if it is not used.
Users can change settings, clear recent rename history, disable PaperName, or uninstall the extension at any time.
Security
PaperName limits its use of accessed data to extension functionality and does not include analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking scripts. No method of local storage or network transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
